Washington : US Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on Tuesday met with Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani here and discussed relations between the two countries.
“Obama supports democracy in Pakistan,” Prime Minister Gilani later said in brief remarks to the media.
The Democratic nominee is a co-sponsor of the recently introduced Biden-Lugar legislation that seeks to triple economic assistance for Pakistan over next five years ($ 1.5 billion annually) and proposes a similar package for another five years.
He favors sustained cooperation with Pakistan in the fields of education and economic development.
On Monday Republican presidential nominee John McCain telephoned Prime Minister Gilani, who is here on a four-day official visit during which he met the U.S. President George Bush and senior administration officials.
Both US presidential candidates support increased economic cooperation with Pakistan.
