Ahmedabad : A team of the National Commission for Women (NCW), headed by chairperson Girija Vyas, visited the blast sites here and met many injured. It has asked the state government to give special attention to the families of women and children killed in the terror attacks.
Vyas and commission member Manu Snehlata Hembrom are on a two-day visit to the affected areas in the Gujarat city to assess the plight of the women and children affected by the blasts.
“We are shocked and ashamed over the cowardly deed of some anti-national forces,” the NCW chairperson said.
“This is the land of Mahatma (Gandhi). It is the height of sin (as) I will not call it a crime – to blast a hospital and kill doctors who are there for saving lives!” Vyas told IANS Wednesday.
“Our concern is more to do with women and children who fell victims. Merely giving Rs.50,000 is not enough,” she said.
Vyas stressed that apart from treating the physical wounds of victims, there is a need to provide psychological counselling, especially for women and children.
The affected children must be provided free education until the age of 18 and women, whose husband have died or have been injured in the attacks, should be rehabilitated, she said.
The NCW chairperson also said that those who had suffered severe burns should be provided free plastic surgery as many cannot afford it on their own.
Hospitals like Apollo or Sterling can easily adopt one or two patients and provide plastic surgery and psychological treatment to these victims, she suggested.
Girija and her team visited the Civil Hospital, V.S. Hospital and LG Hospital.
She also asked the Gujarat government to maintain peace and harmony in the state and to provide all necessary help and succour to the injured and the families of those killed, specially women and children.
Twenty-one blasts ripped through Ahmedabad Saturday, killing at least 50 people and injuring over 200. On the days following the terror strike, 22 bombs were found in Surat, about 200 km from here.
