Urdu can play a role in Indo-Pak friendship: J&K Guv

Srinagar (J&K): Urdu is an international language as it belongs not only to the sub-continent nations – India, Pakistan and Bangladesh – a good number of its speakers are also in Central Asia, Gulf countries, Europe and America, said N N Vohra, Governor of Jammu and Kashmir.

He was giving presidential address at the 20th All India Urdu Conference at University of Kashmir on 30th July. He said being Urdu a global language, its promotion and development will be helpful politically for all. The two-day conference was organized by All India University Urdu Teachers Association in collaboration with Department of Urdu of University of Kashmir.

Governor N N Vohra, who is also Chancellor of the Universities of Jammu and Kashmir, further said Urdu can play a crucial role in bilateral dialogues towards Indo-Pak friendship.

Speaking on the occasion as chief guest, Prof. Reyaz Punjabi, Vice Chancellor of University of Kashmir, stressed on the need for some revolutionary steps for improvement of Urdu teaching and learning.

Dr Ali Javed, Director of National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL), expressed concern over the fact that the state of Jammu and Kashmir does not have Urdu Academy. He was also concerned that given the number of Urdu speakers in the state, there is a shortage of Urdu teachers here.

Others who spoke on the occasion included Amitabh Matto, Vice Chancellor of Jammu University and Dr Shahid Perwez of Maulana Abul Kalam University (New Delhi).
