Gymnastics legend Shakhlin dies at age 76

Kiev : Gymnastics legend Boris Shakhlin died of a heart attack Friday, the Olympic Committee of Ukraine announced here Sunday. He was 76 years old.

Shakhlin won seven gold, four silver and two bronze medals for the Soviet Union at the Olympics in 1956, 1960 and 1964, making him the 11th most successful athlete in Summer Games history.

He also won six titles each at world and European championships, and six Soviet all-around titles.

After his career, Shakhlin acted as coach in the Soviet Union and was later head coach and president of the Ukraine gymnastics federation. He was also a judge for the ruling body FIG at major international competitions.
