By Xinhua,
Baghdad : A U.S. soldier was killed by an armored-piercing roadside bomb in northeastern Baghdad on Sunday, the U.S. military said.
A military statement said that the attack was conducted by an explosively formed penetrator, or EFP, which is an explosive charge shaped to focus the effect of the explosive’s energy to cut and form metal and penetrate armored vehicles.
U.S. and Iraqi officials have accused Iran of providing such weapon to Shiite insurgent groups in Iraq, a charge Tehran has denied.
The latest death brings the number of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq to about 4,085 since the outbreak of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to media count based on Pentagon figures.
