A vacation bench headed by Justice Siddharth Mridul pulled up the Gujarat police for giving lame excuses after illegally detaining the teenager for more than a week.

The police then handed over Samim to his mother.

The court asked the Gujarat police to file an affidavit by July 18 stating why they detained the child for a over week without any valid reasons.

A team of Gujarat police, here in connection with an old case against Samim’s father, detained the child May 25 from Seelampur area of northeast Delhi.

Taslima soon moved the court by filing a habeas corpus petition, fearing the police might deport her son to Bangladesh.

The police told the court they took the child with them since he told them that his parents were living in Ahmedabad and he wanted to visit them.

The court, however, pulled up the police for not performing their duty properly and infringing upon the fundamental rights of a citizen.
