The Government has allocated over 20 million Sri Lankan Rupees to provide immediate relief to the affected people.

Though floodwaters in many areas are now receding, the Meteorological department has forecast continued inclement weather that could throw the relief measures out of gear.

Displaced families had been provided temporary shelter mainly at government schools and Buddhist temples.

Rains have marooned several thousand people in the southern districts of Galle and Kalutara, the southeastern districts of Kegalla and Ratnapura, and the central hilly areas since Friday.

So far 20 people have lost their lives and over 2.4 lakhs displaced in the floods in various parts of the Island country, officials said.

The Department of Irrigation has warned that the water levels in the Nilwala Ganga and Kuda Ganga, which is a branch of Kukuleganga were rising in Southern Sri Lanka.

The plight of people in several parts of the capital Colombo was precarious due to knee deep water in their houses and the roads in low lying areas.

Reports from provincial areas said transport was badly hampered in several parts due to landslides and the rising water levels which had left several roads impassable.

The Air Force and the Army are on alert and undertaking relief measures.
