Peace deal with Israel needs “miracle” — Palestinian official

Ramallah : The head of the Palestinian negotiating team, Ahmad Qurei’, said on Wednesday that reaching a peace deal with Israel this year would warrant a “miracle.” Qurei’, during a meeting with Fatah leaders in Ramallah, said several committees had been formed with the Israelis to address various issues of dissension between the two sides, but “the negotiations have not yielded any positive outcome yet.” Latest meeting beetween Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, held on Monday, ended with no breakthrough with regard of the basic issues on the negotiating table, namely status of Jerusalem and settlements.

On the Palestinian disputes, Qurei’ expressed optimism on resolving differences between the two mainstream groups, Fatah and Hamas, and indicated that the deal that had been reached in Sanaa stipulated Hamas’ end of control over Gaza and the holding of elections.
