New Delhi : Expressing deepest condolences and sympathies with the families of the victims of a terrorist attack on India’s Road Project personnel in Afghanistan, India, strongly condemned the latest act of terrorism in which one ITBP constable was killed Thursday.
“We strongly condemn this latest act of terrorism on a project being executed for the development of Afghanistan. Such acts will not deter us from fulfilling our humanitarian commitments”, said a statement issued by Navtej Sarna, Spokesperson Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi.
An Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Constable Dev Kumar was killed, while four other personnel have been injured.
The injured are receiving medical attention in the Project Headquarters.
There have been several attacks during the building of the 218-kilometer road by the Indian government’s Border Roads Organisation, BRO, and about 10 Indian nationals have been killed over the past few years.
The Zaranj-Delaram highway project is part of the 750-million US dollars assistance committed by India for reconstruction of Afghanistan.
With Pakistan denying India direct road access to Afghanistan, the highway will evolve into a gateway from India to Central Asia via the Iranian port of Chabar.
New Delhi has approached Iran for permission to develop the port, from where it would like to lay a road or provide a rail link to the starting point of the road.
Besides a strong ITBP contingent, locally recruited Afghans provide protection to the 400 BRO personnel constructing the road.
