By Xinhua,
Islamabad : Pakistan Friday submitted a formal request to the UN for investigation into the assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, Dawn TV reported.
Pakistan’s UN Ambassador Munir Akram met with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and submitted the request, the report said.
Bhutto was killed in a gun and bomb attack last December while attending a political rally. She was a leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).
President Pervez Musharraf asked for a Scotland Yard team to join in the investigation after Bhutto was killed.
But the coalition government led by the PPP said the Scotland Yard team was given “limited mandate” during their probe, and not authorised to investigate who are the persons behind the hideous crime.
The PPP, now headed by Bhutto’s widower Asif Zardari, has been asking for a UN probe into Bhutto’s assassination since she was killed.
