On Saturday, representatives of leftist factions met members of the Islamic Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip “to invest the efforts in making the dialogue successful,” said Jamal Abu Hashem, a Hamas official in Gaza.

These contacts came as President Mahmoud Abbas of Fatah said Wednesday that he is ready to talk with Hamas to end divisions which occurred when Hamas ousted Fatah and took over the Gaza Strip by force a year ago.

Abu Hashem revealed that several principles were agreed to be basics of the national dialogue, which include “the unity of the people and the land,” “the unity of the authority and the government,” and “respecting and committing to the basic law.”

He also stressed that the parties have to respect the results of 2006 parliamentary elections which brought Hamas into power.

Other issues, such as ceasefire with Israel and the Israeli soldier whom Hamas kidnapped in 2006, are still under discussions with Egypt which is mediating between Hamas and Israel, according to Abu Hashem.
