A suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive device exploded near a patrol base in the northern Tamim province, killing one U.S. soldier and wounding 18 Americans as well as two Iraqi contractors, said a brief military statement.

The casualties were taken to a military hospital, it said.

Tamim has a mixed population of Arabs, Kurds and Turkomen, with the oil-rich city of Kirkuk as its capital.

Iraqi police said five civilians were wounded in the attack, which they said was by a suicide truck bomb against an Iraq-U.S. joint base at al-Rashad, 25 km southwest of the city of Kirkuk.

At least 4,094 members of the U.S. military have died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003, according to media count based on Pentagon figures.
