Paris/Algiers : A double bombing Sunday aimed at a French construction firm in Algeria left at least 13 people dead, witnesses told local news website Tout sur Algerie.
The dead included a French citizen and his Algerian driver, who were killed in the initial blast. A second bomb went off as emergency workers and police arrived at the scene, the report said.
The French government confirmed that a French engineer had died.
The attack occurred at a construction site near the train station in Beni-Amrane, about 100 km east of the capital, Algiers.
The firm, Razel, is working to repair a train tunnel in the area that was damaged in an accident. A company convoy also fell victim to a terrorist attack by Islamic extremists in September 2007.
In Paris, French President Nicolas Sarkozy condemned the attack that claimed “many victims” and the “barbaric and blind violence” the Algerian people face. France pledged assistance in the north African country’s fight against terrorism.
