Colombo : Sri Lankan Air Force jets pounded a gathering point of LTTE leaders in a rebel stronghold Saturday, as fierce ground clashes killed 13 Tamil Tigers in the island’s embattled north, the military said.
Fighter jets bombed a command centre of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), located three kms north-east of Puthukkudiyiruppu area, Air Force spokesman Janaka Nanayakkara said.
He said that the Air Force had received “reliable information that a meeting of LTTE leaders was taking place at the command centre at the time of the attack”.
The exact damage caused is yet to be ascertained.
In ground clashes, troops killed at least four Tiger rebels in Janakapura and Kiribbanwewa areas of north-eastern Welioya yesterday, the military said.
Three LTTE rebels were shot dead in Alankulam and Nedunkandal areas of Mannar yesterday, it said.
