Athens : A strong earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale struck south-western Greece Sunday, causing minor injuries to some and trapping five people in a collapsed building.
The earthquake, which was felt as far away as the northern port city of Thessaloniki, the Ionion island and the Greek capital Athens, caused panicked residents to rush out onto the streets.
Emergency services said two people were slightly injured in the area of Ahaira after a roof fell on them and one on the island of Lefkada by falling rocks. There were a number of reports of abandoned buildings having collapsed.
The epicentre of the quake was put at some 35 km north-east of the city of Patras, some 150 km west of the capital Athens, and at a depth of 10 km.
The Thessaloniki Geodynamic Institute said the quake measured 6.5 on the Richter scale, while the US Geological Survey said it had a preliminary magnitude of 6.1.
