If Senator Clinton is serious about wanting the number two spot, she may well be interviewed by her former rival’s team of three people employed to vet prospective candidates.

The ex-First Lady officially suspended her campaign for the White House yesterday, surrounded by hundreds of people roaring applause for her effort so far.

She told Democratic supporters they now have a duty to make sure Senator Obama wins the election and said she was throwing her “full support” behind him.

Senator Clinton has apparently already told colleagues she would be interested in being the Democratic nominee’s running mate.

And one of his most high-profile supporters, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, has told reporters Senator Clinton has made “a powerful case for her eligibility” to be on the ticket.

But despite welcoming her backing, Senator Obama has left no hints about whether he will pick her to join him on the rest of the ride.

He has told how his search for a running mate will be deliberative and wide-ranging and speculation is rife in the US about who he will go for.

Among the other names on analysts’ lips are Jim Webb, 62, a Vietnam veteran and Virginia senator; 60-year-old Tom Daschle, a former Senate Majority leader from South Dakota and an early backer of Obama; and Bill Richardson, 60, the Hispanic governor of New Mexico.

Senator Obama is also said to be considering Clinton supporter Evan Bayh, 52, as well as one of his earliest backers Tim Kaine, 50, and Republican Chuck Hagel, 61, who is from Nebraska and is a conservative Vietnam veteran but outspoken critic of the Iraq war.
