Kerala sets up sports commission

Thiruvananthapuram : The Kerala government Monday announced setting up of a seven-member sports commission to suggest way to improve sports infrastructure in the state and nurture talent.

Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan told reporters here the commission would be headed by former director general of the Sports Authority of India, A.K.Pandya.

“There would be six other members in the commission, including former Olympians Suresh Babu and Shiny Wilson, the sports council president and three others,” said Achuthanandan.

State Sports Minister M. Vijayakumar added that the commission has been given six months time to submit their report.

“We have set out detailed terms of reference on which they will work and our prime focus is to see that sports becomes a subject in the school and college curriculum. Physical fitness is another area where a lot of attention would be given by the commission,” said Vijayakumar.
