PM reiterates government’s commitment to Assam

New Delhi : Pointing out that Assam has been receiving a large chunk of central funds for the past four years, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Monday reiterated his government’s commitment to development and peace in the north-eastern state.

Addressing a delegation comprising leaders of the All Assam Students Union (AASU) and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Singh said the central government was giving special attention to Assam’s needs under various programmes like the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), National Urban Renewal Mission (NURM) and Backward Regions Grant Fund.

The prime minister assured that his government was taking all necessary steps to check cross border infiltration and illegal migration in the state.

Reiterating his commitment to the implementation of the Rajiv Gandhi Peace Accord, Singh said Assam has received special support in the sphere of education, infrastructure development and industrial development.

Singh, who also met former Assam chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, said it was his personal commitment to ensure economic and social development, as also peace and security, in the state.
