Islamabad : At least 13 paramilitary soldiers were killed when a Pakistani border check post came under fire from the Afghan side, media reports said Wednesday.
The casualties occurred at Chopara checkpost in remote Mohmand tribal district along the frontier with Afghanistan late Tuesday night, the Geo television news channel reported citing unnamed sources.
Tension has been continuing in the district’s Gorapari area for the last few days over the alleged attempts by the Afghan national army to set up checkpoints inside Pakistani territory.
Some media reports claimed that the casualties were caused in a NATO airstrike that killed at least 13 paramilitary troops, including a major, and four civilians.
The private Aaj news channel said Afghan troops captured the Pakistani border post Tuesday night and were returning after protest by the Pakistani military when NATO planes bombed the site.
The military did not confirm the attack and said efforts were being made to establish contact with the check post.
