Earlier, the NDA had called a 12-hour protest, but reduced the time span to save people harassment, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state unit president Pashupati Nath Singh said here. Though shops were closed in the morning, the shutdown had little impact. The BJP is the largest party in the NDA.

The Left parties, which had earlier called a similar shutdown Wednesday, also advanced the date by a day.

The Jharkhand government has already announced a 3.5 percent reduction in sales tax on diesel and a Rs.40 subsidy per cooking gas cylinder. Diesel will now be available in the state at Rs.35.66 per litre, while each gas cylinder will cost Rs.316.75.
