Beirut : Lebanese President Michel Suleiman called Tuesday for the adoption of a new security policy and said only politics can safeguard civic order, local Naharnet news website reported.
Politics sponsors security and security, in turn, leads to a prosperous economy, Suleiman said to a delegation representing Lebanon’s economic authorities headed by ex-minister Adnan Qassar, according to the report.
The president also spoke of the ordeal that the Lebanese people are going through due to the ongoing economic hardship.
“Lots of proposals and good ideas (in this regard) should be considered. However, the priority is to safeguard Lebanon and the solidarity of the Lebanese,” Suleiman said.
Under the aegis of the Arab League, Lebanese pro- and anti-government politicians reached an agreement in Doha on May 21, ending a 18-month-long political deadlock in the country.
The first phase of the agreement led to the election of Suleiman as the new president on May 25 after six months of a presidential vacuum, while the second step is to form a national unity government giving the opposition led by Shiite militant group Hezbollah the long-awaited veto power.
The rival leaders also agreed to adopt the 1960 electoral law under the Doha accord, which came after the long political crisis in the country turned violent earlier in May.
