“We have seen a major trend amongst many young professionals, college-goers, house wives and elderly people to switch over to online business in India. About 12,800 Indian sellers are presently making a livelihood on eBay. We want more people to join in this online buying-selling network from the eastern states of India,” Murlikrishnan B., eBay India category management director, told IANS on the sidelines of an event here Wednesday.

He said the total volume of the company’s global transaction was $59 billion last year.

“We hold a significant share in the Rs.11 billion online market in India. eBay India is registering more than 30 percent year-on-year growth, which is much higher than the national average,” he said.

Murlikrishnan added that a recent study had revealed that about 34 percent of Indians prefer to shop using eBay’s online platform.

Indian buyers, who prefer to use eBay as an online retail entity, are predominantly male and belong to the age group of 18-35 years, he noted.

“We have altogether three categories of online sellers – casual, businessmen and brand sellers. But there is an overwhelming majority of businessmen who want to try their luck in e-commerce and choose eBay for that reason,” he said.

eBay, a 100 percent subsidiary of eBay Inc, has a total two million registered users across 670 cities in India. The popular categories on e-Bay India include electronic gadgets, lifestyle products, media and collectibles.

“We have a strong presence in 39 countries in North America, Europe and Asia Pacific. About 55 percent of eBay’s total business comes from its international operation. We have already done a record business of about $1.48 billion in the first quarter of the current financial year,” said Deepa M. Thomas, spokesperson of eBay India.

She added: “With the target of encouraging more entrepreneurs in online selling, eBay India is poised to grow in the Indian market as well as in the Asia Pacific.”
