Sheikh Hasina to be released to seek medical care abroad

Dhaka : Former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina will be released from detention so she can seek medical treatment abroad, officials said Wednesday.

Hasina, the leader of opposition Awami League, detained on corruption charges for nearly a year, is to be released Wednesday for eight weeks so she can obtain medical treatment abroad, said prison chief General Zakir Hussain.

She is due to fly to the US for ear and eye problems.

Hasina, who led Bangladesh from 1996 to 2001, has been held in a special jail set up on the grounds of parliament since July.
