Brussels : Hamas leader Khaled Meshall has urged Europe to take a lead role in finding a solution to the Palestine question.
In an interview with the EuroNews TV channel broadcast late Wednesday night, Meshall said the Europeans “need to know that there isn’t a solution by hiding behind the American’s impossible conditions. The solution is to give Palestinians their rights and put an end to the Israeli occupation. At the moment, there is a historic chance”.
Meshall, who lives in Damascus, urged Europeans “to drive the international community, in conjunction with Russia, China and others, in order to return the rights of Palestinians and end the Israeli occupation”.
He ruled out recognition of Israe,l saying “I have already said we would be able to sign a truce. There are other formulas, but we have already stated recognition is not one”.
Meshall denied any Iranian military support to Hamas. “There is however financial support to the Haniyeh government from certain Arab countries. What is the problem? It’s the Palastinian people’s right,” he said.
The EU has put Hamas on its blacklist and refuses to have any contacts with the Islamic group unless it recognises Israel.
