Chandigarh : Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda Thursday assured a fair probe into the suicide of a woman who had allegedly been raped by two policemen. The cops had been arrested a few hours earlier.
Head constable Balraj Singh and constable Silak Ram were arrested late Wednesday night outside the residence of the Rohtak superintendent of police (SP), where they had come to surrender, a police official said.
“They were handed over to SP crime branch, Rajinder Singh, who is carrying out the investigation in this case,” the official said. Rohtak district’s Chief Judicial Magistrate Bhupinder Nath Thursday sent them to police custody till Saturday.
The victim, Sarita, committed suicide in the office of Haryana’s additional director general of police (ADGP) V.B. Singh Monday, leaving behind her husband and two daughters, five and three years old.
She was frustrated with police inaction against the two cops who had allegedly raped her inside a police station.
Hooda has announced Rs.500,000 as relief to the family of the victim. On Thursday, he said “an inquiry in the most appropriate and just mode will be carried out in the case”.
“Strict action will be taken against all the accused after proper investigation and once the inquiry report is with us,” Hooda said at a press conference here.
Rajinder Singh is supposed to submit his inquiry report in 10 days.
“State police is apologetic and repentant over this case,” Hooda said. “We will take care of the family and an immediate financial help will be provided to them. If she had approached me in time the situation would have been entirely different today.”
