The incident happened in the volatile Helmand province of Afghanistan this morning, said provincial police chief Brig. Gen. Mohammad Hussain Andiwal.

He said a man wearing a burqa was spotted by policemen approaching towards the compound. He was warned not to approach the police compound.

After ignoring all the warnings and signals, the policemen opened fire at him to stop him from entering the compound and avoid any possible worse scenario, said the police chief.

He said the explosives fastened to the body of the suicide bomber remained undetonated.

Taliban militants so far did not issue any comment.

Helmand province is the stronghold of the Taliban and direct as well as roadside bomb attacks on Afghan and foreign troops are rampant in the province.

Four days back, armed men kidnapped an Afghan journalist in the same province. His dead body was found the next day.
