Mumbai : European chemical manufacturing major Bayer has launched several eco-friendly projects in India, including a tool to analyse and reduce carbon dioxide emissions in industrial production, the company said here Friday.
Bayer plans to assess its global production facilities by the end of 2009 using this new measurement tool – the Bayer Climate Check – which also includes raw materials, logistics and energy consumption in its carbon dioxide emissions analysis.
The company said it is also toying with “EcoCommercial Building”, a concept where emissions from buildings do not go above zero-level.
Moreover, it is now constructing an administrative building for itself that will require 70 percent less electricity than comparable structures. The building, which will be completed by 2009-end, has insulation made out of raw materials Bayer uses.
According to Bayer, the building will meet its residual energy requirement through the emission-free generation of solar energy. “What is special about this concept is that it can be adapted to the world’s different climate zones. In Germany, too, the EcoCommercial Building has met with specific interest,” it said.
On the issue of bio-fuel, the company said that with its jatropha plant project “we are extremely serious in pursuing plant-based energy resources”.
The inedible jatropha plant grows on barren land and has seeds containing 30 percent oil, which scientists have found can be used for biodiesel production.
Bayer said it is working on bio-fuel projects, and at present “is exploring collaboration possibilities with farmers for jatropha cultivation”.
