Washington : US Democrat senators are trying to bring forward a bill to change the conditions and treatment that immigrants receive at detention centers, an issue that has ignited strong criticism against the White House.
When presenting the plan, legislator Robert Menendez denounced many illegal immigrants are drugged to be relocated in the country, or deported to their places of origin.
He also criticized the deplorable state of jails and institutions where they are held, as well as legal violations by US authorities.
The New York Times affirmed Wednesday the George W. Bush administration ignores its responsibility to provide medical care to illegal immigrants under its custody.
The prison system designed for them is characterized by maltreatment, lack of specialized personnel, ineptitude, lack of health care and excessive secrecy, the source noted.
Very few US nationals are aware of events in those centers, the daily warned, and recalled illegal immigrants have died under suspicious circumstances.
