Poll shows Israelis divided over truce with Hamas

Berlin : A recent public opinion poll showed Israelis divided over a truce with Hamas, as well as over talks with Syria and the Palestinians and over withdrawal from the Golan Heights.

The poll was conducted by German Adenauerstiftung.

The results also showed most Palestinians oppose a peace deal with Israel like that proposed by former US president Bill Clinton, with supporters at 49 percent and opposition at 52 percent.

Support of an independent Palestinian state coinciding with Israel was meanwhile 58 percent among the Palestinians.

Talks between Israeli Premier Ehud Olmert and PA Chief Mahmoud Abbas were thought useless by 55 percent of the Israelis and by 68 percent by the Palestinians among the sample.

As for the truce with Hamas, support was at 47 percent and opposition at 50 percent.

The poll showed 67 percent of Israeli opposing talks with Syria and withdrawal from the Golans.

The poll was conducted in cooperation with the Harry Truman Institute in Israel.
