Ahmedabad : No more cases of anthrax have been detected in Gujarat’s Bagdana village where seven cows have died since June 13. The situation is under control, an official said Tuesday.
Bhavnagar Collector Pradip Shah told IANS Tuesday that both the veterinary and medical teams will be working in the area for three more days.
A cow died June 13 and blood samples were sent for tests. Six more cows died in Bagdana village.
The administration took necessary steps the moment a fax message was received about the blood test report on anthrax being tested positive. Anthrax is a disease in humans and animals caused by Bacillus anthracis that is highly lethal in some forms. There are effective vaccines against anthrax, and some forms of the disease respond well to antibiotic treatment.
Presently there is no scare among the people. Yet, we are fully alert and prepared to deal with any situation, Shah said.
“Bagdana is a small village. We have examined over 13,000 people comprising Bagdana and nearby villages. Those who handled the cattle have been given prophylactic antibiotics as a precautionary measure,” Shah said.
According to a health official, nearly 50 cases of fever and cold and four cases of skin problems have been found.
The state animal husbandry department has so far vaccinated 1,000 animals of Bagdana and animals from the neighbouring villages too are being checked, the official said.
