Brown sugar worth Rs.140 mn seized

Mumbai : The city police Tuesday seized a consignment of 11.7 kg of brown sugar worth nearly Rs.140.4 million ($3.34 million) from Chembur, a suburb in northeast Mumbai, and arrested four people.

This is the biggest seizure of its kind in the past 15 years, Deputy Commissioner of Police V.N. Patil told reporters here.

The arrested are Hanif Samad, Parasmal Nathaji, Mohammed Ayub and Rajesh Verma, he said.

Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) chief Hemant Karkare, who was also present on the occasion, hinted at the involvement of some underworld operatives currently absconding and operating from foreign countries.

The consignment was brought from places in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh and was meant for delivery in Chembur.

Recognising the efforts, the Mumbai Police announced a cash reward of Rs.25,000 for the investigating team that seized the drugs.
