Hakim Tariq Qasimi, Maulana Khalid Mujahid, Sajjadur Rahman and Mohammad Akhtar were arrested in connection with bombings at court premises in Faizabad and Lucknow on November 23, 2007. Some Lucknow district jail officials reportedly did not allow these men to recite the Quran in their barracks. Instead, some of these officials despoil the holy book, saying you have become jihadis by reading this book.

When the jail superintendent B. C. Yadav combed the barracks of all alleged terrorists, including Hakim Tariq Qasimi, on 13th June, he found in the barrack of Hakim Tariq Qasimi a copy of the Quran along with a few papers on which prayers to ward off troubles were written. Seeing this, the jail superintendent got enraged, threw away the book and torn the papers containing prayers.

The incident came to light when the brothers-in-law of Hakim Tariq Qasimi came to Lucknow jail to meet him. After several hours’ wait, jail officials finally granted them a meeting of half an hour during which Hakim Tariq Qasimi gave them the details of what happened on Friday.

The relatives of Hakim Tariq Qasimi informed advocate Mohammad Shoaib in Lucknow. Advocate Mohammad Shoaib says he will request the court to take cognizance of jail officials’ misdeeds.
