Lucknow : Perhaps for the first time in the history of Uttar Pradesh, over 1,200 errant policemen have been punished in the past one year during which the government of Chief Minister Mayawati has been in power.
“About 625 cops lost their jobs because of indulging in unlawful activities while an equal number faced other punitive actions for their acts of indiscipline,” Cabinet Secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh said at a press conference here Tuesday evening.
He said: “The magnitude of the action against errant cops clearly shows the chief minister’s sincerity and commitment towards ensuring proper law and order in the state.”
“Her candid talk about the blatant malpractice of auctioning of police stations in the state amply reflects her courage of conviction to admit whatever was wrong with the policing.
“Mind you, this malpractice was not something that had picked up overnight. It has been going on for years, but what needs to be appreciated that the present chief minister has the intention of mending it,” he said.
“Complaints against misdemeanour of cops and about alleged extortion by the men in uniform were being now taken up very seriously and deterrent action had followed in all such cases,” he added.
