New Delhi : India’s opening batsman Gautam Gambhir feels that it would be interesting to challenge the on-field umpires when the review system is tested during India’s Test series in Sri Lanka next month.
“It is a new element and I feel it will be interesting to see how it works. It will be exciting prospect to challenge the umpires,” Gambhir told reporters here Tuesday on the sidelines of a promotional event.
The Indian cricket board Monday announced that the review of on-field umpiring decisions will be on a trial during the India-Sri Lanka three-Test series, starting July 23 in Colombo.
Asked, whether the review will take the human element out of the game, Gambhir said: “I don’t think so, a wrong decision can change the course of the match and cost the team. But I think with the system in place, everyone will get a fair chance and the matches will be close and exciting.”
According to the new rule, a player can ask for a review of any decision of an on-field umpire pertaining to the batsman’s dismissal with the exception of ‘timed out’. A player can ask for the review making a ‘T’ sign raising both forearms head high.
Each team is allowed review of three decisions in an innings till they are all unsuccessful and any reversal of decision is not counted unsuccessful.
Gambhir also said that he was happy with his form and hoped to continue with it in the Asia Cup, starting in Pakistan June 24.
“When you are in good form, it is important to carry on with it and make the best of it. Because you don’t know when you will hit the rough patch,” he said.
