Dale Steyn sweeps major South African cricket awards

Johannesburg : Fiery fast bowler Dale Steyn, who had a great international cricket season, has swept all the major South Africa cricket awards.

Steyn was nominated for four awards and he bagged them all. He was named the South Africa Cricketer of the Year, Test Player of the Year, South Africa Players’ Player of the Year and the SuperSport Fans’ Cricketer of the Year.

Steyn had an outstanding season, claiming 78 wickets at a splendid average of 16.24 in 12 Tests with two ten-wicket hauls. He claimed 15 wickets in the three Tests on the tour to India.

Steyn had claimed 42 wickets in 11 Tests in four seasons prior to this one as he missed quite a few Tests with a side strain. Makhaya Ntini, who had been the spearhead of South African attack in recent years, was second with 30 wickets.

South Africa captain Graeme Smith is the country’s One-Day Cricketer of the Year.

All-rounder Albie Morkel, who was a star performer in the Indian Premier League for the Chennai Super Kings, has been honoured with the International Pro20 Cricketer of the Year award.

South Africa’s women’s cricket captain Cri-Zelda Brits is the Women’s Player of the Year.
