Munich : Shiv Kapur and Jyoti Randhawa made marginal upward moves on the final day of the BMW International Open, which belonged to Martin Kaymer, who became the first German to win the title at home in its 20 year history.
Both Kapur and Randhawa shot one-under 71 each to within one shot of each other Sunday. Kapur’s 71 saw him end at three-under 285 and in tied 40th place, up from 47th, while Randhawa was two-under 286 and tied 47th up from 52nd.
Kapur had a fine front nine with three birdies against one bogey to turn in two-under. He birdied the second, sixth and ninth and dropped a bogey on seventh. On the back nine, the Indian in his third year on the European Tour, bogeyed 11th and 14th and birdied the 13th.
Randhawa had a roller-coaster of a round with three bogeys on the first six holes and three birdies in the last six holes. In the intervening six holes, he had one birdie more.
He seemed headed for a disastrous final round with three bogeys in first six holes as he dropped shots on second, third and sixth. But over the last 10 holes, he found four birdies to haul himself back to an under par card. He birdied the ninth, 13th, 16th and 18th.
Kaymer started the final day six shots clear of the field but after three days of superb golf he struggled to the turn in 38 and ran up a triple-bogey eight on the long 11th, putting two balls in the lake short of the green.
But he fought back and birdied two holes later and then, needing another on the par five last to match Hansen’s 15-under par total. Kaymer was on in two and almost made a 40-foot putt for eagle but the birdie still took him to a play-off, where he won to take the 333,330 euros ($520,000) first prize.
English trio of Paul Casey, John Bickerton and Mark Foster tied for third on 13 under par 275.
Hansen, who had knee surgery under a month ago and was originally told he could be out for four to six weeks, had been eight behind at the start of the day, but closed with two 67s.
Kaymer earlier won in Abu Dhabi in January – two weeks before finishing runner-up to Tiger Woods in the Dubai Classic.
