Srinagar : Three separatist guerrillas and a paramilitary trooper were killed and four security personnel wounded in two separate gun battles in Srinagar Sunday, police said.
Teams of the special operations group (SOG) of the police and the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jointly surrounded a house near Chatterhama area in the morning following information that militants were holed up inside. Chatterhama is 14 km from the city centre Lal Chowk.
“Militants holed up inside the house opened indiscriminate fire at the raiding party of the security forces, resulting in the death of a CRPF trooper. Four other security men were also injured in the exchange of fire,” a police officer said.
He said security forces then engaged the militants in a gun battle.
“One militant has been killed so far while the other is still holed up inside. More reinforcements have been rushed to the spot,” he added.
Kashmir Inspector General of Police S.M. Sahai was supervising the operation, he said.
The officer said that two militants of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) were killed in another shootout Sunday at Narwan Sadhav forest area in south Kashmir’s Shopian district.
The gun battle started after troops of 31 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and SOG jointly launched a search operation in the forest.
