The attack occurred late on Sunday in the al-Wihda neighborhood in southern Mosul, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The attack also resulted in the damaging of several nearby buildings and civilian cars, the source said.

On Friday, the same neighborhood was the scene of a suicide car bombing when a suicide bomber blew up his explosive-laden car near a police checkpoint, injuring five policemen.

The incidents occurred as the U.S. troops and Iraqi security forces are staging a security crackdown against insurgent groups in Nineveh province which said to be one of the last strongholds of al-Qaida fighters in the war-torn country.
