“I was greatly saddened to hear of the passing of Jane McGrath,” Rudd was quoted as saying by The Herald Sun. “Jane’s courageous struggle touched all Australians. Jane was an inspiration whose legacy will continue to benefit so many others. The thoughts of all of us are with Glenn, James and Holly at this difficult time,” Rudd was quoted as saying by The Herald Sun.

Jane was detected with breast cancer 11 years ago and from that heart-wrenching she started McGrath Foundation, which helps patients suffering from the deadly disease.

Former Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh, whose wife Lynette battled serious illness – a blood clot in the brain – two years ago, said Jane’s courage was an inspiration for Glenn.

“The thing that stands out to me about her was her attitude and will to try and get better all the time and see the positive side of life,” Lynette said. “It was a great inspiration for Glenn. Her positive attitude and trying to make the most of every day helped Glenn throughout his career. She was always very upbeat.”

The Premier, Morris Iemma, praised Jane’s “pioneering work” on breast cancer. “Jane has provided lasting hope to thousands of women battling this insidious disease,” he said. “More young Australian women are now ‘breast-aware’ because of trailblazing efforts of Jane McGrath. She enriched our lives with a spirit of humility, courage and virtue. Her wonderful efforts will never be forgotten.”

The Federal Opposition Leader, Brendan Nelson, said: “She was a champion in the hearts of all Australians for her determination in the face of her battle with breast cancer. Our condolences to Glenn and their children.”
