Paris : The French NGO Movement against Racism and for Friendship among Peoples called to demonstrate on Tuesday against the Administrative Retention Centers (ARC) for illegal immigrants.
The call came after the ARC building in Vincennes, in the outskirts of this capital, was set on fire on Sunday. As a result, 20 people were wounded, serious material damage was reported, and some 50 illegal immigrants escaped, authorities said.
According to local sources, the fire was caused by the immigrants themselves in disagreement with the death of a Tunisian citizen on Saturday. The immigrant, who died of a heart attack, was scheduled for repatriation following a Paris appeal court ruling.
The Movement said in a communiqué that this and other deaths have resulted from the obsessive and inhumane policy that criminalizes immigration.
In its call, the organization expressed solidarity with the rebelliousness expressed by the immigrants held at the center, and urged all who think the ARCs are a shame for the republic to demonstrate on Tuesday.
