Pentagon Says Iraq Security Gains ‘Fragile, Reversible’

Washington : The security situation in Iraq continued to improve from March to May, with violence at its lowest level in four years, but the gains are “fragile, reversible, and uneven,” a quarterly Pentagon report said Monday.

“The security, political, and economic trends in Iraq continue to be positive; however, they remain fragile, reversible, and uneven. Recent events in Basra, Sadr City, and elsewhere have generated new challenges and opportunities for the future,” the report said.

“The security environment in Iraq continues to improve, with all major violence indicators reduced between 40 and 80 percent from pre-surge levels, ” the report said, referring to last year’s increase in U.S. troops. “Total security incidents have fallen to their lowest level in over four years.”
