Guwahati : More than 50 separatists surrendered Tuesday before the Indian army authorities in two separate functions in Assam, officials said.
Twenty six militants, including 20 belonging to the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), laid down arms before army authorities at Mariani in eastern Assam’s Jorhat district. Six others were from the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN).
In another surrender ceremony, 32 ULFA militants laid down arms before army authorities at an army base in Tamulpur in western Assam.
“In all, the militants laid down a large cache of weapons and explosives while surrendering,” an army commander said.
Most of the rebels who surrendered said they were frustrated with life underground and disillusioned with their top leaders leading a luxurious life abroad.
