Amman : Britain and energy-scarce Jordan are likely to enter into a nuclear cooperation agreement this weekend, diplomatic sources said on Wednesday.
British chief on atomic energy Barbara Thomas Judge is expected to come to Amman this weekend to ink the deal with her Jordanian counterpart Khaled Toukan, the British embassy said.
The embassy did not elaborate on the deal but indicated that the two sides would discuss how the energy-hungry country could share British experience in nuclear energy.
Facing natural resources scarcity, Jordan is endeavoring to seek for alternative energy sources and has adopted legislation in2007, paving the way for the peaceful use of nuclear power to generate electricity and desalinate water.
It has reached a nuclear deal with France in May and an earlier memorandum of understanding with the United States last September to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
Officials said the government plans to bring its first nuclear plant on line by 2015 and hopes nuclear power will make up 30 percent of energy production by 2030.
