Bhopal : Describing those detained under the now-defunct Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) as true sentinels of democracy, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan Wednesday said that an inquiry would be held into false criminal cases registered against people during Emergency.
Addressing a function held to honour those detained under MISA and Defence of India Rules (DIR) during the 1975-77 Emergency, Chouhan said: “It is a chapter in the history of Indian democracy that no one would like to read and those who opposed were real fighters for the second independence of the country.” Emergency was imposed on June 25, 1975.
The Madhya Pradesh Government earlier this week issued a gazette notification to implement the state cabinet’s decision to offer a lifelong honorarium to those who were detained under MISA and DIR during the Emergency.
In case of death of MISA detainee, the spouse would receive 50 percent of the honorarium amount, the state government decided.
