Bangalore : The Karnataka assembly was adjourned for an indefinite period Wednesday amid a Congress protest demanding a probe by a legislators’ panel into the death of a farmer in police firing.
The other opposition party, the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S), walked out of the assembly following the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government’s rejection of the demand.
One person was killed when the police fired at farmers protesting against fertilizer shortage in Haveri in north Karnataka June 10.
The government has ordered a judicial probe into the incident but the Congress and JD-S want an investigation by a panel of legislators.
Amid the walkout and the Congress protest, the assembly adopted the motion of thanks to the governor for his address to the joint sitting of the assembly and council earlier this month.
The Congress had staged a protest Tuesday too.
At one time, Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa threatened to take his entire cabinet of 30 ministers to New Delhi to stage a protest in front of prime minister’s house if the Congress continued its protest in the assembly.
The leader of the opposition in the assembly, Mallikharjun Kharge, hit back saying the Congress will not be cowed down by such threats.
Besides the death of the farmer in the police firing, at least 12 farmers have taken their lives since the BJP assumed office May 30.
While relatives and farmer organisations claim that these farmers were driven to suicide because of fertilizer shortage and debts, Yeddyurappa says in most of the cases personal and family problems was the cause.
