Srinagar : Narendra Nath Vohra was Wednesday sworn in as governor of Jammu and Kashmir at an impressive ceremony on the lawns of the Raj Bhavan in summer capital Srinagar.
The state’s High Court Chief Justice K.S. Radhakrishnan administered the oath of office and secrecy to the new governor.
Immediately after the oath-taking ceremony, the new governor was given a guard of honour and introduced to the council of ministers, judges of the high court, senior civil and military officials and also to prominent politicians and citizens.
Vohra, who joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1959, handled important assignments during his bureaucratic career serving as the country’s defence secretary, home secretary and secretary of defence production till his retirement in 1994.
He was principal secretary to I.K. Gujral when the latter was the prime minister during 1997-98.
Vohra became the central government’s interlocutor on Kashmir in 2003 and held several rounds of discussions with the separatist leaders here.
Among those present at the swearing-in ceremony were Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Hussain Baig and senior cabinet ministers from the ruling coalition partners, the Congress and the People’s Democratic Party.
Former chief minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed and National Conference president Omar Abdullah were also present.
Vohra replaces S.K. Sinha.
