Anuj Dayal, spokesperson of the Delhi Metro Railway Corporation (DMRC), said the month of June spells huge jump in passengers thanks to the rush in DU.

“The admissions in DU starts in June and ends only by mid July. This is one of the best periods for the DMRC. This month our ridership has gone up by 100,000 per day,” Dayal told IANS.

Normally an estimated 650,000 people travel by the metro everyday. But all through this month, the ridership hovered around 750,000.

With the increase in commuters, the revenue collected by DMRC has also shot up.

“On an average we are recording an extra 50,000 footfalls per day in the metro, mostly along the Rajiv Chowk-Delhi University line. This has resulted in our revenue being pushed up by Rs.1-2 million per day,” Dayal said.

The admission process in DU begins with the availability of the admission forms by the end of May. The forms are generally available until mid June when students and their parents flock the university campus to buy and submit the necessary forms.

Subsequently, the university announces its first cut off list in the fourth week of June (June 26 this year) after which the admission process in the various colleges begin.
