Beirut : Lebanese President Michel Suleiman said Saturday he was hopeful that a new cabinet will be formed within 48 hours, local LBC TV reported.
“It is important that the cabinet is formed within 48 hours,” Suleiman said, addressing a diplomatic delegation in the presidential palace.
“There is no excuse for not forming a national unity government, particularly after the agreement we reached in Doha,” he said, stressing that “the formation of the government is a basic step towards national dialogue.”
He also called on political leaders to facilitate the formation of a new government.
“A grave mistake would be committed against the Lebanese people by anyone who does not facilitate” the government formation.
The newly elected president who took office on May 25, assigned Fouad Seniora as the premier to head the next government.
An agreement to end the Lebanese political deadlock was reached in Doha on May 21. The agreement calls for the election of a new president, which was already accomplished on May 25 when Suleiman was elected.
But, the second phase of the agreement which calls for the formation of a national unity government has been blocked for over a month now, amid disagreement between Lebanese leaders on the cabinet line-up.
