ISAF soldier, four civilians killed in Afghanistan

Kabul : One soldier of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) was killed and three others were wounded in a landmine blast in eastern Afghanistan.

The military said the army convoy was on patrol in Khogiani district of the country’s eastern Nangarhar province, when hit by a roadside bomb.

Spokesman for the ISAF in Kabul Brigadier General Carlos Branco expressed grief and shock over the killing of the soldier.

He said the brave man laid his life to bring peace to Afghanistan and people of the country.

Names and nationalities of the soldiers would not be released till notification of next of kin, said the spokesman. Meanwhile, four civilians were killed in two rocket attacks in Afghanistan’s southeastern Khost province, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said on Sunday.

The first attack was carried out on an ISAF base that left one Afghan civilian. The troops returned fire but no casualties were reported. A total of 13 rockets were fired on the base. No ISAF soldier was killed or injured in the attack, said the military.

In a separate attack, three rockets, fired from the Pakistani side of the border, landed in a village named Kandai killing three more civilians, said an ISAF statement.

The attack was carried out early Sunday morning. The statement said ISAF troops fired artillery shells in the direction into the Pakistani side from where the rockets were fire.
