Ambulance officers were called to a house in Brougham St, Cowra, in the state’s central west, at about 2 p.m. local time where they found the bodies of a woman and two children, reportedly a two-year-old girl and a boy aged 5, according to a report by Australian Associated Press.

Another woman, believed to be a police officer, was taken to Cowra Hospital suffering serious head injuries. She was later airlifted to Orange Base Hospital in a “very serious condition”, a spokeswoman for the Greater Western Area Health Services said.

Police are searching for a silver-colored Toyota Avalon sedan that was seen leaving the area after the incident happened. Police urged the public not to approach the car being sought, but to contact police immediately.

Police have cordoned off a 400m zone around the house where the fatal attacks occurred, and locals reported a heavy presence of officers in bullet-proof vests with their guns drawn.
